ENGLISH LANGUAGE II
2015-2016
SSD: L-LIN/12, Exam code: 085LE
(6 CFU)
Instructor: Claire Fennell
Language assistants: Joanne Baldoni, John Daer

English Language II is the first of a two-year skills-based course aimed at taking students to level C1 (‘Effective Operational Proficiency’) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by the end of English Language III.
Special attention will be given to academic writing skills, including planning, organization, paragraph structure, coherence, cohesion, sentence structure, collocations, synonyms and use of outside sources.
All teaching will be in English, and regular attendance is highly recommended.

The attainment of the level required to pass English Language II will be verified by an examination designed to test student proficiency in the receptive, productive and interactive modes (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking). The exam consists of four parts: 1) Reading and Use of English; 2) Writing (an essay); 3) Listening; 4) Speaking.
An overview of the exam can be found on p. 6 of the Coursebook (see below). A detailed description of the exam format will be provided when the course commences.

Please note that students cannot sit the English Language II exam until they have passed the English Language I exam.

N.B. The course is open to all students of the Department. However, those not enrolled in the Foreign Language and Literature degree course will be asked to sit a placement test.
