Titolo:

British Periodicals

Temi:

British magazines and periodicals over the centuries, in the fields of politics, art, literature, science and society, and more.

Autori:

The project is by the late Professor Daniel Fader of the University of Michigan. He is recognized as the father of the writing-across-the-curriculum movement in the United States.

 Contenuti e fonti:

The resource collects British periodicals and journals from the 17th to the 20th century. Most of these were chosen using the criteria of importance and difficulty in finding them in American libraries. There is also a disclaimer, explaining that gaps are present due to the rarity of the materials collected.

 Funzionalità:

It was impossibile to view the database. The ProQuest company has recently been taken over and there is a paywall. Despite a button directing to a Free Trial, this was not working.  The text description states that the database offers "facsimile page images and searchable text for over 500 British Periodicals...totalling almost 5 million pages".

It is also described as an "uniquely powerful, multidisciplinary database"

 Obiettivi e pubblico di riferimento:

The audience is librarians and researchers who might need to refer to these periodicals as part of projects or to support others in their research.

 Architettura web, chiarezza, navigabilità:         1

Ricchezza dei contenuti:         1
Qualità degli apparati descrittivi e delle guide:         1
Giudizio complessivo:

As explained above it was not possibile to review the site because of the newly installed paywall. The look and feel of the website is highly commercial and not very academic and therefore, in my view, quite offputting. There is the possibility to download some information sheets: in my opinion the informayon presented on these is in an old fashioned format and doesn't follow a specific flow. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the collection was created a good number of years ago.
