GENERAL INFO ON THE COURSE
FORMAT OF THE COURSE: It's a Lab course of 6 European-Credits-Transfer-System points (ETCS, or "Crediti Formativi Universitari", CFU, in Italian) for the "Laurea Magistrale" in Physics (equivalent to an advanced Master Degree in Physics in the Anglo-Saxon system). It is proposed in particular, but not exclusively, for students from the Condensed Matter training track, and does not requires particular knowledge of Condensed Matter beyond that acquired during the Bachelor Degree. It amounts to a total of about 72 hours of activity: about 1/2 of lectures (theory and demo) and 1/2 of assisted sessions of Computer Lab
- Hands-on Lab. sessions (which are extremely important) include:
- simple introductory exercises (with implementation and use of several basic algorithms of numerical analysis) to recover a basic expertise on Fortran 90, use of computers, error handling;
- exercises for specific applications and simulations, collection and analysis of data, visualization;
- comprehension, use, and rewriting of sample codes (draft sources in Fortran 90 - used as an example)
- personal implementation of new codes
- IMPORTANT: Participation is mandatory (see: Regolamento didattico (Italian only), Art. 14); in case of problems, contact the teacher. The attendance to the lectures and Lab sessions will be monitored. Admission to the exam is possible only upon attendance of at least 75% of the hours in class/lab.
- TIME SCHEDULE: The Course is scheduled for the I SEMESTER 2024/25. Lectures are planned with the following weekly schedule (1 Unit = 0.5 CFU per week), starting from 23 September 2024:
- 2+1 hours of lectures (Mon 9:00-11:00 [lecture] + Fri 13:00-14:00 [discussion of session lab], Building F, Room B)
- 3 hours of hands-on session (Thu 13:00-16:00; Building F, Lab Poropat II floor)
- LANGUAGE: Slides and materials are in English. Lectures could be given in Italian or English (in English if attended by foreign students from international programmes). Students can give the exam either in English or in Italian.
- Students are invited to use their own PC / laptops, that should be equipped with some standard software for editing, programming (fortran90, c++, python, ...) editor, simple visualization software.
